Avril Lavigne - Keep Holding On
Avril Lavigne's "Keep Holding On" was the unlikely closing song of the sword n' sorcery cheesefest "Eragon." Lavigne's prefab punk was very much out-of-place. Prefab punk&dragons don't exactly mix (neither did "Born to be Wild" and the Rock Eaters in the third Neverending Story movie) "Keep Holding On" holds pride of place as one of Lavigne's least annoying songs. It verges to the sappy&sentimental--but that's in keeping with the movie's sugar-coated ending in which pretty boy Dragonrider Eragon&elf princess Arya gaze lovingly at each other.
"Keep Holding On" is ambiguous. Is it supposed to be the dragon Saphira's song of loyalty to her Rider,Eragon,or is it Arya's love song for Eragon? The lyrics don't quite make sense. The title itself addresses dragon riding, there are verses about standing together in battle. But other lyrics are amorous. Lavigne is no Enya-- but how much can one expect from a Canadian prefab punk? Especially when it comes to a thankless task of writing an inspirational song for a B movie?
